Science : 5th Grade

  Hello and welcome back to the 5th Grade Science Corner!  In the last 2 weeks, our students have enrolled in the New Frontiers Space Academy.  We began our studies in the academy by learning about the universe and its parts.  Our students learned to identify different types of galaxies.  They also learned about 4 early astronomers: Ptolemy, Brahe, Galileo and Halley.

Our studies then focused on the solar system.  We learned the order of the planets in our solar system. To help our students learn more about the planets, each class was given a research project.  Two classes became teachers for a day.  They were assigned to groups and researched a planet.  They were asked to give a presentation with a visual aid and assign homework or classwork.  Some of our students were very creative! 

The third class became reporters.  They were assigned a planet and needed to write an article about it.  They are currently polishing up their articles and we should have a magazine out soon!

We then competed in "The Planet Olympics".  There was the physical and mental challenge.  We had different activities to help reinforce what our students had learned.

The final topic of study at the academy was the sun.  Our students learned about its different layers and types of activity. They also learned about the difference between fusion and fission.  

The time has come for our students to take their exit exam and leave the academy.  For more information on the exit exam, please refer to the homework page. 

Students will be testing Monday and will not be returning to science class until Friday due to Benchmark testing be done this week.
