In First Grade, students continue to develop their oral language and communication skills and move to becoming independent readers and writers. First grade students listen attentively and connect their experiences and ideas with information and ideas presented in print. Students listen and respond to a wide variety of children's literature, including selections from classic and contemporary works.

We would like to start by sending a reminder about this month’s Field Trip. On Monday, April 28th, we will be going to the Henry B. Gonzales Convention Center to watch the American Theater Arts for Youth, Inc. perform Beauty and the Beast. We are still looking for chaperones for this Field Trip, if you would like to go please stop by and see your child’s teacher. Background checks will need to be completed by Friday, April 18th. look forward to hearing from all those who would like to participate.
In the beginning of May, we will be taking the final TPRI test. We would like to stress the importance of this testing. To be considered for promotion your child must be reading at the ending 1st grade level or higher. We would like for you to take time during your day to read with your child and encourage your child to read to you as well. information will be available soon for 2008 First Grade Promotion Requirements.
Lastly, during the last week of school 1st Grade will have its Annual Field Day. We play games and have a small snack. We look for parent volunteers to come in and help us make this a great success. Please let us know if you would like to help in this activity.

Hello and welcome to a small look inside our classrooms. We run fairly structured classes, with high expectations of all our students. We welcome parent involvement and assistance in the classrooms. There are many opportunities in our classes for a fun and organized education. We are currently using the Open Court Reading Curriculum. It teaches our students phonics and blending to help them become successful readers. It also allows for many cross curriculum activities, which gives students a better understanding of the material.Math is a hands-on learning experience in my class. We use many manipulative and real life objects to grasp the concept of the week. We follow the Sharon Wells Scope and Sequences. It touches all the basic components of mathematics. It also allows students a great start to the problem solving methodology.Science and Social Studies are included in many of the other lessons. We, as a first grade team, come up with creative ways to incorporate cross curriculum activities. We have a well-rounded understanding of the TEKS that are a part of this curriculum. We offer real life experiences, as well as, bringing in outside resources to ensure the success of understanding science and social studies.
Ms. Garcia's Classroom:
First grade is a wonderful grade to see children blossom. UTSA gave me many opportunities to help my students become very successful. This will be my third year teaching first grade here at New Frontiers.
Ms. Palomino's Classroom:
Teaching is the profession that teaches all other professions. I am fortunate to be able to work with your children and instill what I have learned. In turn they are forever teaching me and I am doubled blessed to be a part of their learning.
Ms. Zepeda's Classroom:
I am a part of a wonderful and experienced first grade team. This will be my second year as a first grade teacher. I enjoy working with students and work hard to ensure their success in my classroom. I am highly motivated and love the sound of busy classrooms.
