Fifth Grade

In Grade 5, students refine and master previously learned knowledge and skills in increasingly complex presentations, reading selections, and written compositions. Fifth grade students can identify a speaker's persuasive technique such as promises, dares, and flattery in presentations. Students read from classic and contemporary selections and informational text. Fifth grade students are able to judge the internal consistency or logic of stories and texts. Students recognize the way an author organizes information and engage in more sophisticated analysis of characters, plots, and settings. Fifth grade students are able to select and use different forms of writing for specific purposes such as to inform, persuade, or entertain. Students vary sentence structure and use conjunctions to connect ideas. Students are able to use literary devices such as suspense, dialogue, and figurative language in their writing. Fifth grade students edit their writing based on their knowledge of grammar and usage, spelling, punctuation, and other conventions of written language. Students produce final, error-free pieces of written composition on a regular basis. Fifth grade students search out multiple texts to complete research reports or projects. Students use visuals to support their research projects.

kidstest.jpgFifth grade is pleased to announce that we have travelled through our TAKS path this year taking us by both the Reading and Math tests.
Our journey, however, is not over yet. We still have to prepare for our Science TAKS test coming up May 1.
Our survival strategies have included attending Saturday TAKS Camps, afterschool tutoring sessions, and rotating in our different groups throughout our days at school.
We are building up our brain muscles having to carry so much information around and stopping by to visit with so many amazing teachers and awesome classrooms.
We are hoping that at the end of our journey we can find ourselves relaxing during our end of the year celebration wherever that may take us.

I am teaching a new grade level, 5th grade, this year. I look forward to the challenge.I began my teaching career in Ohio, where I graduated from Otterbein college. I taught high school English and French, as well as middle school and elementary. I also taught for 1 year in Guam, where I acconpanied my Air Force husband. I have 3 children, all grown. One is in graduate school, one teaches at Reagan High School, and the other is starting a business. I also have one lovely granddaughter. Teaching has always been my choice of career. I enjoy watching my students grow. This past year, I have watched my "third graders" become true fourth graders. I look forward to seeing my fifth graders become middle schoolers.

Mrs. Nava PDF Print E-mail
Written by Webmaster

My name is Grace Nava and this will be my fifth year teaching at New Frontiers Charter School.  I have taught both fourth and fifth grades.  I have lived on the southeast side of San Antonio all of my life and have attended nearby elementary, middle and high schools.  I have degrees in both business administration and education.  I have also attended St. Philip's, The University of  Incarnate Word and Our Lady of the Lake University.  I am married and have an eleven year-old daughter.

I am part of an awesome fifth grade team.  I am very fortunate to be able to learn and share with experienced and innovative educators like Ms. McDonald and Ms. Juarez.  We are constantly searching for stimulating learning experiences for our students.  We have recently introduced literature circles and are reading and discussing elements of a variety of books.  We are also studying different purposes for writing as well as different styles of writing.  Our focus in math is to learn and apply strategies that will help our students become independent thinkers and problem solvers.  In social studies, we are learning about the expeditions and contributions of early explorers.  In science, we are excited about our visits with Mr. Sonic, the scientist!  So far we've had a blast conducting experiments related to science safety, matter, and force and motion.  We look forward to several more visits from Mr. Sonic this school year.

I hope you have an awesome year!
