Mr. Rick Barrera is originally from Corpus Christi, TX. He is a graduate of Tuloso-Midway High School. After high school, Mr. Barrera earned an Associates Degree in Kinesiology from Del Mar College in Corpus Christi then later attended Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi. He graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Management and Minored in Health. He was the recipient of the Kinesiology Student of the Year Award. Mr. Barrera........
worked for the Corpus Christi Athletic Club as a Personal Trainer while working on this degree. He moved up the ranks to become the Assistant Fitness Director. His hobbies took him rock climbing, hiking, canoeing and mountain biking. This led to a job with Youth Odyssey working with at-risk youth doing the very same things he loved. Youth Odyssey sent him to training in Arizona where Mr. Barrera hiked 75 mile across the desert! Mr. Barrera became Ropes Certified as well as earned a Southwest Outdoor Educator Certification. After moving to San Antonio, Mr. Barrera worked for Sea World San Antonio in the Education Department. He was able to get in the water and swim with the Beluga Whales and touch Sea Lions, Penguins, California Sea Otters, and Killer Whales! Later he became the PE Coach for New Frontiers Charter School. He moved into the classroom teaching 6th grade Math and Science then moved down to teach 5th Grade Math and Science. Last year Mr. Barrera taught 6th Grade Science and Social Studies. This will be his 7th year at New Frontiers. he teaches Fifth and Sixth grade Science . Last year Mr. Barrera was selected to be a part of the Texas Regional Collaborative and became a Texas Science Mentor.
Mr. Barrera is currently holds the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt in Kung Fu and 1st Degree Black Sash in Tai Chi. He is currently working on material to test into 3rd Degree Black Belt for Kung Fu and 2nd Black Sash in Tai Chi. He is an Assistant Instructor at the Shaolin-Do San Antonio North School and head instructor of the Kid's only school at New Frontiers Charter School.

Intervention
Intervention New Frontiers evaluates every child to determine if they are need of extra help in any given subject on an on going basis to evaluate the need for intervention. Once the need is discovered an action plan will be set in place assist each child to reach his or her objectives.
